November 29th – December 3rd

This week I completed the revisions on the Ginseng Diggers.  There were a lot of challenges creating this advertisement.  Mainly finding a complementary color palette of the book cover.  It was extremely difficult due to the cover being a bright lime green and orange.  Another issue was finding how to organize the advertisement visually.  There needed to be a visual component of separation to help the legibility of the advertisement and product.  I decided to break it down into two different colors with a soft textured layer.  Overall, I am satisfied with coming to a resolution with this advertisement and starting a new one next week.

November 22nd – November 23rd

This week was shorter due to the holiday break.  I received feedback from Jackie on the advertisement on Tuesday.  The feedback Jackie suggested was “Move the logo to the bottom of the ad, add ‘Available February 2022,’ replace the Timothy Silver blurb with this one: “Meticulously researched and beautifully written, Ginseng Diggers is a tour de force in the still-emerging field of U.S. commons history. A worthwhile read for anyone interested in imagining more sustainable futures…”— Kathryn Newfont, author of Blue Ridge Commons and co-editor of The Land Speaks, and play around with a different background color(s).  On Monday, I will incorporate these changes into the advertisement and send another version.

November 15th – November 19th

This week I saw the social media holiday sale ads going up.  It is posted on Instagram and the Kentucky Press website (https://www.kentuckypress.com/).  After this assignment, Jackie informed me that I would be working on some magazine ads for next year.  These would be for Ginseng Diggers, My Place in the Sun, Bourbon is My Comfort Food, The Little Book of Whiskey Cocktails, and History of HBO.  I started working on the Ginseng Diggers as it has the closest deadline (1/11/22).  I decided for this advertisement to create an earth-toned color palette based on the book cover.

November 8th – November 12th

This week developed another version of an ad to promote the University Press of Kentucky’s Holiday sale.  The new version maintained the same assets as the snowglobe design I developed last week.  The difference between the development is due to this version being a print design.  It will be featured in Kentucky Monthly with limited dimensions.  The main challenge is the change in orientation.  Originally, the snowglobe design was a square layout.  Due to the printed version being vertical, I started by putting the snowglobe at the bottom of the ad.  Then I added the sale information in the center.  In order to balance the graphic image at the bottom, I inserted hanging ornaments at the top next to the title text.  Then, I had a meeting with the UPK representatives and fellow interns.  The meeting discussed future opportunities and employment options at publishing companies.  It was beneficial to know about all the various branches I could go into if this is something I want to do for my career.

November 1st – November 5th

This week I continued making and designing holiday-themed social media ads.  After I made the graphic for the globe, I was introduced to Canva for the first time.  I took some time to learn the system and how it functions.  It took some time as I had never used a program like this before.  Once I inserted the graphic, I began looking at different fonts and colors to use for the ad.  I continued to make other drafts including a ribbon and ornament in Canva.  I then went back to Illustrator to create more holiday-themed designs such as a snowman and hot chocolate.

October 27th – October 29th

This week I began designing and creating holiday-themed social media posts.  These posts will be promoting the winter sales on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.  From a design standpoint, these posts needed to be festive, legible, and accessible to everyone during the holiday season.  I started by researching older holiday posts created by the University Press of Kentucky.  After reviewing their profile, I went to research various styles used for holiday social media posts.  I decided my first draft would be based around a snow globe.  This concentrates their attention towards the center while text can be put around or inside the globe.  While creating this design, I began to think about other motifs for the next round of drafts.

This week I focused on creating promotional flyers for the Spring 2022 internships at the University Press of Kentucky.  These flyers are promoting the marketing and graphic design internship.  I made five different layouts along with color schemes to grab attention.  I wanted each design to emphasize the important text and information provided.  I knew it was important to be updated yet related to the University Press of Kentucky.  After creating the different iterations, I sent them to be reviewed by Jewell for feedback.   Once this task was completed, I continued to work on the Civil Rights Catalog and further the development of it.

October 11th – October 15th

This week I continued to work on revisions to the Civil Rights catalog.  Jewell asked for a new type of layout where the praise portion (currently located next to the book information and cover) moves towards the end of each section of the catalog.  This would be a dedicated page at the end of each section and have the name of the book along with the review.  With this change, I am extending the book information section to cover the rest of the page.  The new layout allows exploration with bigger-sized fonts and more white space.  I think the current format changes being made will allow for more options overall.  Throughout the week, I also troubleshoot with Jackie to fix an older advertisement that was not exporting correctly.

October 4th – October 8th

This week I completed the edits on the catalog and submitted them back for review.  While waiting on feedback from the marketing department, I began working on Instagram and Facebook ads for Jewell Boyd, a marketing assistant on the team.  The ads are for Drowned Town and Washington’s Iron Butterfly.  For these types of ads, the goal is to have striking visuals and a secondary image next to the book cover to represent a theme of the book.  This allows someone to take a quick glance to get a quick summary of the novel.  Along with these images, a quote from an author, magazine, or paper is often included to show the highlights of the book from a professional perspective.  For these early drafts of ads for Drowned Town, I wanted to experiment with different colors and borders before adding the secondary image (a house) for the theme.

September 27th – October 1st

This week I received feedback and several notes for the Civil Rights Catalog from Brooke Ruby.  Her detailed notes and suggestions are leading the way to update the current catalog situation.  Some of the feedback I received from Brooke involved too much white space, having uniformed size text, and scaling up the size of book covers.  Due to the layout I presented, we decided to have almost all the books having covers and blurbs of text for promotion.  I think this will be good overall as the images make it visually engaging while separating each review.  It allows more books to be easily promoted while at the cost of adding more pages in the catalog.  My goal for next week is to fix all the issues and add all needed information and then begin on the introduction pages of the catalog.
